Navigating Holiday Feasts: Tips for Your Weight Loss Journey
The year is quickly winding down, so we’re just a few weeks away from the holiday season. This time of year is often filled with decadent meals, sugary or alcoholic beverages, and plenty of late nights, all of which can take a toll on your health and weight-loss efforts.
Considering these obstacles, putting your weight loss journey aside and waiting to pick it back up after the new year can be tempting. But with the right strategy, you can continue making progress without missing out on your holiday favorites.
Women’s health specialist, Kirstie Cunningham, MD, FACOG, NCMP, at Metro Health and Wellness in Marietta, Georgia, and Nashville, Tennessee, regularly counsels patients on holiday weight management. Here, she provides simple yet effective tips for staying the course through Thanksgiving and into the new year.
1. Plan ahead
Holiday gatherings often feature sweet treats and decadent main courses. You don’t need to avoid these indulgences or deprive yourself, but planning ahead can reduce some of the temptation and keep you from overeating.
View the menu before heading out to see if there are any healthy options. If that’s impossible, have a small, nutritious snack or meal beforehand. With a partially full stomach, you won’t be as tempted to graze on everything, but you’ll still have enough room to enjoy some of your favorite seasonal treats.
2. Practice mindful eating
Classic sides like buttery mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and turkey stuffing are easy to overeat. However, you don’t want to overdo it if you’re trying to lose weight and maintain your progress. Eating mindfully can help you stay on track by keeping you present and focused on your food.
For example, instead of going down the buffet line and having a bit of everything, select a small plate and portion out only the foods you want to try. Once you begin eating, take time to really savor your food. Focus on the smells, textures, and flavors. Slowing down and paying attention to your senses can help prevent overeating.
3. Move your body
Many people stop exercising because the holidays are often filled with travel and late nights. This is understandable, but regular movement is one of the best ways to burn calories and maintain weight.
Try to set aside at least 30 minutes daily for activity, whether going on a walk with the family, riding your bike around the block, or swimming at the local rec center. Physical activity supports your metabolism and boosts energy and mood.
4. Be kind to yourself
Weight loss is challenging year-round, and the holidays can make it even more so. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you decide to splurge on a treat or skip your exercise routine. Lasting progress isn’t about one decision but building long-term habits. If you start beating yourself up, remember that each day is a new opportunity to recommit to your goals.
